Eyelid hygiene is the set of those activities devoted to the cleaning of the eyelids in cases of conjunctivitis (bacterial, viral, allergic), inflammation of the eyelid rim (blepharitis, chalazas, styes) or in the aftermath of surgery and presurgical procedures.

Eyelids

Eyelids are thick muscle-cutaneous membranes that cover the front of the eyeball. The eyelids have two faces: anterior cutaneous and posterior conjunctival. On the free margin also called the eyelid rhyme, the eyelids have eyelashes and outlets of sebaceous glands, which are very important as they produce the lipid layer of the tear film.

The function of the eyelids

Eyelids are very important in protecting the surface and the entire eye from external agents. Their function is related to a mechanical action, thanks to their frequent movement of closing and opening (blinking), any foreign bodies such as grains of dust or physiological debris are collected and then removed, and, again through blinking, the eyelids provide for the continuous distribution of the tear film on the ocular surface with the simultaneous release of the lipid component of the tear film providing, therefore, to keep the ocular surface clean and hydrated. When this is not done, the cornea can go into very serious damage.

The efficiency of the eyelid system is therefore very important and should be preserved with careful hygiene that also takes into account adequate dermatological support. In fact, as we have said, the eyelid is a muscular-cutaneous organ, and an overly aggressive cleaning system can lead to an improvement in the clinical picture, but do further damage to the eyelid itself by limiting its efficiency at the level of its physiology and the physiology of the entire ocular surface. It is therefore necessary, in addition to ensuring its cleanliness, to preserve its hydration, elasticity and turgidity.

There are gauze pads specifically formulated for this purpose, which provide ideal hygiene while preserving the functional integrity of the eyelid.

It is important, in order for an optimal result to be achieved, to follow simple tips to best use these cleansing gauzes as needed: It is important, in order for an optimal result to be achieved, to follow simple tips to best use these cleansing gauzes as needed:
